How long would it take for my dog to learn to play fetch with this dog toy?
It depends on how often you train them and the dog themselves. Remember that not all dogs learn as quickly as other dogs. Some learn fast, others take a little bit more time. However, dogs are very smart. This means that with persistent practice, they’ll soon be able to play fetch all by themselves.
First, you have to get your dog used to the sounds that the machine makes. Start by fetching the ball yourself a little bit far away from the machine and playing with your dog, then get closer slowly as long as your dog feels comfortable and safe.
Once your dog is so close to the machine, make them smell it and guide them to the side, so they don’t get hurt when the ball launches. See how they react to the sounds of the machine makes while shooting the ball. If it doesn’t scare them, then move on to the next step.
Next, you’re going to train your dog to throw the ball into the machine themselves. You will do so by standing in front of them when the ball is in their mouth and place your hand under their mouth. That way, when they drop the ball, it is going to fall into your hands.
Reward them with some treats and continue practicing with them fetching the ball and dropping it into your hand. Once they master that, continue doing the same thing, but this time, you’ll be h placing your hands above the opening of the machine where the tennis ball is supposed to be dropped.
With time, the dogs will understand that when the ball goes into the machine, it will shoot it itself. Also, they’ll notice that treats come out, so they’ll learn in a positive way how to fetch via positive reinforcement.
