Getting them used to grooming tools

First of all, you need to make sure your dog trust you 100%. I am sure they already do as only great pet owners constantly want to improve themselves to help make their best friends lives easier.

Show them the tools.

Let them sniff comb and scissors. Then turn on your automatic trimmer next to them so that they can get used to the sound.

Generally, this should not take longer than a minute or two, your dogs should only get an idea.

Then, switch on some relaxing music for both of you. This doesn’t have to be Mozart or Beethoven. It is whatever you two like, as long as your dog can associate it with positive feelings.

Break down the sessions

Have you ever had a list of to-do things for home, yet you didn’t feel like doing them all at once? I would usually spread them towards the morning and the evening, as I am most productive there. For your dogs, it may be good to do the same.

Start by dividing your grooming sessions into two parts.

One is for bathing and possibly combing the first time. The second time should be a little while later after you have distracted your dog with another activity. The main reason for this is your dogs’ limited attention span.

After making sure your dog has recharged for round 2 of grooming, you can get out the comb and scissors and possibly the trimmer if you want to.

As long as your dog doesn’t get dirty in the time between sessions, you can take your time.

Dazzling Dental

We all want them pearly whites, so what about our dogs? While I don’t agree with obsessing over brushing your dogs’ teeth after every meal, regular dental hygiene is an important factor to make sure your dog feels good and stays healthy.

Dogs can suffer from many of the same dental problems that humans may.

It is advised to brush your dogs teeth every 2 to 3 days.

Honestly, your dog will probably never like them. They won like having a toothbrush or even a finger brush shoved into their mouth, mostly because they can’t comprehend the importance behind why we are doing that.

However, they have to learn to tolerate it. That is best done by teaching them as early on as possible. As you may encounter a few complications, it is advised to hire a trainer for the first couple of times.

Like that you can simply blame it on the trainer if your dog looks annoyed (Just joking).

Don’t start brushing their teeth before consulting your veterinarian about it though.

Many different breeds have different dental structures and may need special attention when it comes to the way you brush, what you can and can’t do, and so on…

Beware CLAWS!

Having your dog run up to you as you come home after a long day at work is one of the best things. But as they jump up to give you a hug they also scratch you hard enough to draw blood.

Well, not really on the last part. That was a little dramatic.

But honestly, my dogs’ nails used to get caught up way too easily in my nice chiffon dresses or leaves long trails of ouch on my bare legs during the Summer.

As you can see in the illustration above, you have to avoid the quick or quickening (the red part) at all costs.

If you were to cut it by accident, it bleeds quite a lot.

This is why it is important to cut your dogs nails correctly, as very often the pups will remember this painful experience for quite some time.

Cutting dog hair

One of the most important parts of dog grooming is cutting your dogs hair.

Most people already know the basics, so I will keep myself short.

Always make sure you are going WITH the direction of the fur. It doesn’t matter if that is regarding combing or trimming.

Cut dog hair on legs very sparingly. They don’t have a lot of fur there anyway, so it is best not to cut the hair there unless necessary.

Only cut knots out once you have truly tried too get rid off it with bathing and combing first.

Never use a trimmer around your dogs eyes. Only use comb and scissors.

A couple of things not to do while dog grooming:

• Don’t cut unwashed dog hair. Bathe them early on in the day so that they have enough time to dry. This allows you to cut dog hair way easier and safer.

• Never yell at your dog or turn it into a negative experience for them. For your dog getting a haircut can be seriously stressful at first. Even though it can be maddening sometimes when they run around the house dripping wet or keeping shifting around, please don’t lose your patience. I know you can do this!

• Never trim the head or tail. Those two places are some of the most sensitive places on their bodies. If you want to get rid of nasty knots or need to downsize their fluffiness a bit, use scissors and a comb. Using a trimmer could seriously hurt your dog, and we don’t want that to happen.
